The Corinthians announced this Monday the former Brazilian coach and former Real Madrid coach, Vanderlei Luxemburgo, as the new coach of the first team, after the resignation of Alexi Stival 'Cuca' shortly after taking office due to an old case of sexual abuse.

Luxemburgo, 70 years old, has signed a contract with the São Paulo team until "December 31, 2023", that is, until the end of this season, according to the club in a note.

Luxembourg is scheduled to debut this Tuesday at the Neo Química Arena in Sao Paulo, in the match against Ecuadorian Independiente del Valle, for the third day of group E of the Copa Libertadores.

It is the third time that Luxemburgo has been in charge of the albinegro team. The first time he took charge of Corinthians was in 1998, the year in which he won the Brazilian Championship.

He returned in 2001 to lift the Campeonato Paulista, the most important regional tournament in the state of Sao Paulo.

In total, he has led the 'People's Team' in 134 games, with a record of 62 wins, 33 draws and 39 losses, according to Corinthians' calculations.

Luxemburgo will replace Cuca, who was forced to resign after strong pressure from home fans over an old case of sexual abuse he faced while playing for the Gremio.

In the late 1980s, he and three other of his companions were detained for a month in Switzerland on charges of having sex with a 13-year-old girl.

After paying a bond, they were provisionally released and returned to Brazil. Cuca, who always denied his participation, was sentenced to 15 months in prison, although he never served his sentence, which has already expired.

But the pressure was enormous and Cuca was forced to retire after barely a week of work.

Corinthians has curdled a turbulent and very irregular start to the season that already claimed as its first victim, at the end of April, the young coach Fernando Lázaro, fired after the bad game and the discreet results of the team.
