The initiative has support within the main opposition party. Tae's proposal comes months after the current South Korean first lady, Kim Keon-hee, urged in an interview to toughen animal protection in the territory and to abandon the practice of consuming canine meat, which among the most developed powers only remains in force in South Korea and China. Dog meat consumption in South Korea has fallen dramatically in recent decades as the number of pet-owning households has increased. The previous liberal government established a mixed committee last year to try to create a "social consensus" on the need or not to ban the consumption of dog meat. Although most South Koreans have never eaten this meat, a survey last year shows that only about a third of the po[CENSORED]tion is in favor of banning its consumption and supporters of this practice argue that people should have freedom to choose what they eat. One third of these dogs and cats are companion animals that have been stolen from their families and homes. “These animals are taken to markets to be sold, where they are kept alive in cages so small they can't even stand up, so they are piled on top of each other. These cages are on display so that consumers of their meat can choose one of them and it is slaughtered on the spot. Koreans believe that the more cruelty, the more flavor," says the animal rights organization.
