These animals, also known as "calico cats" or "tortoiseshell cats", are recognized for having fur with various color combinations. However, contrary to what most people think, they do not belong to a specific race. This name simply refers to cats that have a particular coat pattern, which is why different species of cats, such as Maine Coons or Siberian cats, can enter their catalogue.

Tricolor cats are separated into three distinct families, divided by their color variations: calico cats, tortoiseshell cats, and tabby cats. These three types of kittens are often confused with chimera cats, which are those that have two different fur colors: for example, they can have half their body black and the other half orange. This can also be seen represented in patches of color on their skin. However, some chimera cats can look completely normal on their surface.

Calicos have a genetic mutation that causes their fur to have multiple colors. They are usually composed mainly of white tones and orange, black or gray spots. The color white normally appears predominantly on its chest, belly, and chin.

According to La Vanguardia, the vast majority of these cats are female. This is because a male cat has an XY chromosome and a female cat has an XX chromosome. Because the orange hue comes from the X chromosome, passed down from the mother, it is more common to find calico females.

Finally, tabby cats, also known as "tabby", have a white-based coat, with softened spots: gray, light orange, cream or bacon. Several of them arose naturally, while others were born thanks to crosses made by human beings, who sought to give them a wild appearance. Some of the breeds that have this characteristic coat are: the American Bobtail, the Toyger and the European cat.

Because tricolor cats don't belong to a specific breed, their personality traits often don't resemble each other. Therefore, their temperament usually depends a lot on the socialization they received from their owners, their training, and the environment in which they grow up.
