[Lifestyle] Sony World Photography Awards 2023: the winning images of the renowned photography awards

The winners of the 2023 Sony World Photography Awards, one of the most prestigious photography awards in the world, have now been announced.

The contest rewarded photographs of very different styles, with very diverse content.

Edgar Martins has been named Photographer of the Year for his series Our War.

The project is a tribute to Martins' friend, photojournalist Anton Hammerl, who was shot dead during the Libyan Civil War in 2011.

Martins chose to reflect on the question: how do you tell a story when there are no witnesses, testimony, evidence or even a corpse?

"It's a great honor to be recognized with this award, and while I'm calm about awards and the subjective nature of someone's choice, knowing that there were over 180,000 entries for this year's professional competition is very sobering," says Martins. .

"In this case, it's also quite an emotional experience because I get to honor my friend on a world stage and draw attention to the family's plight to find his remains."

Martins' work triumphed in the "Portrait" category of the Professional competition.

"Tieshan Cement Factory is located in Guilin City in Guangxi, South China.

"The factory was built in 1996 and played an important role in the economic development and construction of the city."

"However, because it was originally located in the Li River area, the cement factory has now been relocated, leaving behind the old buildings, water towers, swimming pools and railway tracks."

"The Right to Play creates a playful world where girls are empowered."

"For this project, I worked with girls from Kakenya's Dream in Enoosaen, Kenya, who have avoided female genital mutilation [FGM] and child marriage, showing what the world can be like when girls are given the chance to continue learning in an environment that supports them and supports their dreams.

"Three years ago I moved to Wenjiang. A short distance from my house there is a tree nursery."

"There you can see exotic trees and rocks from all over the world, including Japanese black pines and maples."

"There are workers who lift these trees and rocks with mobile cranes every day, transport them and plant them in parks, neighborhoods or newly built streets in the city.

"I walk through the forest and take pictures as the trees and rocks rise into the air. Together these images create the Sky Garden series."

A professional baseball player triumphs in the All Male Pro League by Al Bello

"Kelsie Whitmore is the first professional baseball player to play in an all-male professional league"

"She plays the outfield spot and pitches for the Staten Island Ferryhawks in Atlantic League Professional Baseball."

"Her Her Atlantic League debut was as a pinch runner and she became the first woman to start an Atlantic League game when she played left outfield."

Cities Gone Mad by Corey Arnold

"Cities Gone Wild is an exploration of three intelligent animals: black bears, coyotes and raccoons, surviving and even thriving in the human-made landscape while other animals disappear."

"I tracked these animals in cities across the United States to reveal a more intimate view of how wildlife is adapting to increasingly urbanized cities."

The Open competition celebrates the power of individual images.

Dinorah Graue Obscura has been named Open Photographer of the Year 2023 for her photograph titled Mighty Pair, in the Natural World and Wildlife category.

Picture shows two crested caracara birds, on a tree branch in South Texas, USA.

Long Jing, from Yunnan University of Arts, has been awarded the 2023 Student Photographer of the Year for his series titled "Keep the Yunnan Opera".

Jing went backstage to show the shrinking groups of performers and spectators at performances in southwest China.

Hai Wang, also from China, won the 2023 Youth Photographer of the Year award for an image on the theme "Your Everyday."

The photograph shows rows of brightly colored empty chairs set up for a school ceremony that was canceled due to the Covid pandemic.

Alessandro Cinque is the winner of the Sustainability Award, which is being awarded for the first time.

This new award, developed in collaboration with the United Nations Foundation and Sony Pictures' Picture This initiative, recognizes stories, people and organizations whose actions highlight one of the United Nations' environmental Sustainable Development Goals.

Cinque won for their Atrapanieblas series, which documents an innovative solution that helps address chronic water scarcity in Lima, Peru.
