Draeno Posted April 11, 2023 Posted April 11, 2023 A bear killed a young man on a hiking trail in northeastern Italy last Wednesday, an unusual event in the country, local authorities reported on Friday. Andrea Papi, 26, was jogging through a wooded and mountainous area near the town of Caldes, in the Trentino region, when she came across the plantigrade. The young man's family, concerned that they would not see him return, asked the rescuers for help, who found his body early Thursday in a ravine, with deep wounds to his neck, arms and stomach, some of which were clearly caused by a carnivorous animal. Andrea Papi was "alive at the time of the attack" and defended herself with her hiking poles, investigators said, based on the autopsy. DNA analysis should identify the type of bear that killed the young man. In March, a man was attacked by a bear not far from that place, opening the debate on the danger of plantigrades, which are numerous in that region. Thanks to the 'Life Ursus' project, bears were reintroduced in the autonomous province of Trento between 1996 and 2004. In 2021, 69 specimens were registered in that territory. Neighbors and specialists ask for the identification and sacrifice of the animal. Annamaria Procacci, from the National Association for the Protection of Animals (Enpa), denounced the absence of a preventive policy for this type of animal. "Man is not prey for the bear. On the contrary, the bear is a particularly fearful animal that stays away" from humans, the ecologist explained to AFP, who lamented the lack of efforts to "discourage access to areas where there are female bears with cubs". The environmental NGO WWF considered that the bear that killed the hiker should be eliminated. "Removing this specimen reduces the risks of other similar incidents and improves the acceptance of the species by the po[CENSORED]tion," said that organization. It is estimated that there are between 120 and 200 bears in Italy, mainly in Trentino and Abruzzo (southeast) and this is the first fatal incident that has been recorded. https://www.eltiempo.com/vida/medio-ambiente/italia-un-oso-mato-a-un-senderista-de-26-anos-en-la-region-de-trentino-757400
