During the protests a fire broke out in the marquee of the cafe where President Emmanuel Macron celebrated his electoral victory. The police fired tear gas and charged the protesters. Similar minor incidents were reported in other cities. The Ministry of the Interior deployed 11,500 agents throughout France. The policing of protests has become a national debate in its own right. Complaints of the use of disproportionate force by the police have returned.
