Carbohydrates have a bad name in diets. Foods that fall into this category, such as rice, pasta, and flour, have a reputation for causing weight gain, cardiovascular disease, or poor diet when consumed in excess.

However, not all carbohydrates are bad, and they should not be completely eliminated from your diet. Instead, you should prioritize healthier carbs over 'refined' ones for a balanced and healthy diet, advises Susan Bowerman, director of nutrition for Herbalife Nutrition, who gives recommendations when choosing different foods.

Good carbohydrates have some of the essential nutrients for the proper functioning of the body, and are usually found in whole grains, beans, fruits, and vegetables, which are excellent sources of fiber, vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients.

According to Medline Plus, along with protein and fat, carbohydrates are one of the top three nutrients found in foods and beverages. They provide glucose, which is the source of energy for the cells, tissues and organs of the body.

The best carbohydrates are whole, or unrefined. For example, some whole grain breads are labeled "multigrain," but you need to check the ingredient list to see if they are whole or refined.

The consumption of pasta or rice can be harmful if it is eaten constantly and is of the refined carbohydrate type. Therefore, the best option is not to discard these foods, but to opt for whole-grain options that provide nutrients such as iron, folic acid, and B vitamins.

Depending on their preparation, fruit juices can also contain a high amount of calories. Health experts recommend consuming the whole fruit instead of the juice, to which sugar or other components are added that reduce its nutritional value.
