At least 58 people have died and more than 8,000 have been affected due to the current rainy season on the north and northeast coast of Peru. The Civil Defense reported on Friday that it also reports 420 homes destroyed and 2,509 uninhabitable since the rains began in December.

The floods, accompanied by strong winds that affect part of Peru, started this week and grew in the last 48 hours, affecting urban and rural areas of the coastal departments of La Libertad, Lambayeque, Piura and Tumbes, on the border with Ecuador.

The level of seasonal rains shot up due to the presence of Yaku, an "unorganized cyclone" off the Peruvian coast, in the waters of the Pacific Ocean.

Abraham Rodríguez, director of the Civil Defense in the department of Tumbes, expressed: "Right now, we are declared in a state of emergency due to imminent danger of rivers, not due to impact, the impact is coming, according to what it says in Senamhi ( National Service of Meteorology and Hydrology of Peru), that it is going to rain all this week, and the Civil Defense offices of all the districts and provinces are working, delivering humanitarian aid to the entire po[CENSORED]tion.

Yaku's displacement caused the Peruvian Meteorological Service (Senahmi) to activate an alert for heavy rains in Lima, where rainfall is rare. The presence of this type of cyclone is associated with the El Niño climatic phenomenon, which causes overheating of the waters in the South American Pacific, mainly hitting the coasts of Peru and Ecuador with rains and floods.
