Tension on the Korean peninsula continues to grow.

 

 

The United States carried out military maneuvers this Monday, March 6, with a B-52H strategic bomber capable of carrying nuclear bombs. This exercise was done in conjunction with the South Korean Armed Forces.

The South Korean Ministry of Defense was in charge of delivering information on these maneuvers, carried out in the Yellow Sea, in waters they share with North Korea. South Korean F-15K and KF-16 fighter jets have also participated in them, reports the South Korean news agency Yonhap.

Last Friday, March 3, the United States flew over the area with a B-1B bomber, also capable of launching atomic bombs, in response to recent missile launches by North Korea.

"The deployment of this B-52H strategic bomber demonstrates the alliance's overwhelming capability and deterrence and responds to North Korea's nuclear and missile threats," the South Korean Defense Ministry said in a statement.

Faced with these military exercises, the North Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs made a call to the United Nations Organization (UN), where it requested the suspension of these joint maneuvers carried out by the United States and South Korea.

The maneuvers and rhetoric of these allies have brought tensions to an "extremely dangerous level," Vice Minister Kim Son Gyong said in a statement carried by the state-run KCNA news agency.

“The UN and the international community will have to strongly urge the United States and South Korea to immediately stop their provocative comments and joint military exercises,” he added.

The statement comes after authorities in Seoul and Washington announced more than 10 days of large-scale military exercises starting on March 13.

The United States and South Korea say they are defensive exercises, but Pyongyang sees them as rehearsals for an eventual invasion.

The "irresponsible acts" of these two countries will only push the regional situation "to a very critical and uncontrollable phase," Kim said.

North Korea responds
The high command of the North Korean army stated that it will expand and intensify military exercises to be prepared for war.

The pledge was made at a meeting led by leader Kim Jong Un and came after the United States and South Korea held joint air exercises.

Kim presided over the opening of the meeting of authorities to "analyze and review (...) the program of the rural revolution in the new era and decide the important immediate tasks and urgent tasks," the official news agency KCNA reported.

The agenda was dominated by "the issue of constantly expanding and intensifying the (Korean People's Army) operation and combat maneuvers, strictly refining the preparation for war," the official KCNA news agency reported.
