[Politics] Monsalve and second setback by national prosecutor: "Parliament has to join the central tasks of the country"

Yesterday, the lawyer Marta Herrera did not get the votes in the Senate to become the new national prosecutor. Given this, the Undersecretary of the Interior remarked that Chile "does not require small disputes."

For the second time, the Senate rejected the name prioritized by the Government to be a national prosecutor. Yesterday, Marta Herrera obtained 26 votes in favor, 11 against, and 9 abstentions in a session that also left behind a series of recriminations and requests for reform of the election system for office. In the midst of that vacancy, the prosecutors maintain a strike in rejection of the readjustment of the public sector, of which they accuse, they were "discriminated against", which leaves the criminal prosecution system at a complex moment.

In this context, the Undersecretary of the Interior, Manuel Monsalve, reflected in a conversation with Radio Universo that "the challenge of public security is a priority for the people who listen to us throughout Chile. They want the institutions to be able to respond to this urgency, respond in a serious, responsible, coordinated manner. That is the main concern of the Government". "Of course, in that sense, I think it is wrong, in the case of the appointment of the national prosecutor, not to place the work plans at the center, because what the country requires is that whoever leads.

 

 

The Public Ministry guarantees that there will be effective criminal prosecution, that it conducts investigations that can identify, detain, dismantle, and punish organizations that today are bringing violence, weapons, drugs, and homicides to different sectors of Chile," criticized Monsalve. In fact, the authority criticized that some benches "have completely announced the rejection of the President's proposal for the national prosecutor, even before hearing the work proposals (...) I think it is not good for Chile," he stated. Asked about the ability of the Government to order its ranks to receive support in the chosen name, Monsalve maintained that "it is an ability of all governments to order their political base of support, it is a task that has always become more complex in each period, many times even as a result of the dispersion that occurs within Parliament". However, the authority stressed, "Parliament has to join the central tasks of the country, focusing on what the country requires. The country does not require small disputes regarding what could be the closeness of one person to another, which This is what has been discussed regarding the closeness of the candidates with the former national prosecutor Jorge Abbott; what is required is to see if he has a serious work plan, if he guarantees criminal prosecution, the powers to carry it out and with urgency that the country requires," he stressed. "I hope that with the new proposal made by the President, we can focus the debate on those aspects that are what the country requires," he concluded.
