The five days that the Executive has to send to the Senate its choice of candidate to occupy the position of National Prosecutor have already started, after the defeat by only two votes of lawyer José Morales. The talks that are taking place these days between Parliament and the Government are fundamental, since two new names were added, there is no favorite, and in the last process several senators accused that someone who did not have massive support was nominated and He played to achieve a very narrow approval of the proposal, which went wrong after the absences and pick-ups of key parliamentarians for the outcome.

For this reason, for this opportunity, the senators are asking for greater, more direct dialogue, and that a person "without blemishes" be chosen, referring to the background that was known about Morales related to his role in the corruption cases in which he worked. and they did not end with a positive result. "There has to be a direct dialogue with the benches, without messengers, intermediaries, because it muddies the process, takes away transparency and reliability," says PS Senator Gastón Saavedra, who abstained in the election of the first candidate. Regarding the conversations, Saavedra states that he has not yet been contacted by the Executive. "Let the President use his powers and then there will have to be the relevant dialogue, but there has to be. We cannot take something that is not for granted," he affirms. Listen to "all sectors" of the ruling party Senator Esteban Velásquez (FRVS), another of the parliamentarians who did not vote in favor of Morales, assures that the government must listen and talk with "all the political sectors of the ruling coalition, without differences, and pay close attention to those eventual majorities, theoretical, in quotes". For Velásquez, it is necessary for the nomination to meet the demands regarding the standards of citizenship, since this person "must provide certainty and be very solid in his leadership regarding the commitment he must have to combat all types of corruption in the public sphere. ". Parliamentarian Loreto Carvajal, head of the PPD committee, has another look, who in conversation with Emol TV did not focus on the possible errors of the Government in the previous nomination, since she considers that the ministers did a good job, but at that moment "there were a condition that made one think that the votes were going to be obtained". Carvajal, on the other hand, pointed directly to his pro-government partners, and stated that "it is not understandable" that there have been a lack of votes in that sector with perhaps "attentive" but not sufficient arguments, unlike the PPD, whose bench voted aligned with the Government. "I would hope that a finished technical analysis would be made regarding the conditions that a prosecutor or a National Prosecutor must have beyond the guidelines or personal impressions regarding whether or not the candidate is to my liking," she said. The opposition calls for more "care" and a name without "blemishes" .

Who was critical of the role that the Executive should have in the coming days was Senator Iván Flores (DC), one of those who voted against Morales. "I hope they have managed to learn the lesson of what it means to choose well who has to not only lead a complicated and complex institution at a time of juncture, but also someone who has no blemish, who has an impeccable career, who has the ability to lead the Public Ministry," says Flores. "If the candidate meets those requirements, I'm going to vote in favor. If not, I have to act accordingly and with the conviction that it's not what the country needs," adds the senator. Senator RN, Paulina Núñez, is also critical, stressing that "the Government cannot send a name that has not been discussed at least with its own senators, a new rejection would be a bad decision for the institutional framework, for the Public Ministry." In addition, and in response to the comment that had been repeated that the ministers did not know how to respond to the reasons for the election of Morales in the commission, Núñez asks that "the argument of the ministers in the Senate I hope improves, the signals were lukewarm, in my opinion trial and the least the government can do is strengthen the President's proposal".

Meanwhile, Republican Senator Rojo Edwards requests greater "care" from the Government, both in the choice of name and in who he sends to talk to the senators, as Senator Velásquez also raised. "No senator wants to have to reject a President's nomination for a position of such importance as the National Prosecutor's Office. But so that it does not fail again, we ask the government to be careful in the election and also with respect to who sends to talk with the Senate ", he stresses. According to Edwards, the failure to nominate Morales was "unprecedented" and Minister Ríos demonstrated "little political capacity." The Prosecutor's Office needs profound changes and that address the serious crisis of insecurity that we are experiencing. That vision must represent he or the new prosecutor," he adds. Those who have not expressed an opinion so far are the UDI parliamentarians, who were committed to the Executive's proposal and supported Morales almost completely, with the exception of Senator David Sandoval. Only after the nomination made by the Executive and after hearing the candidate in the Constitution Commission, the UDI will issue its opinion, explains Iván Moreira."The problem lies with the Government, with which we have not discussed the issue, and it is who has the greatest responsibility, because this is not the time to improvise in this nomination, given that in the country crime and drug trafficking is overflowing and nobody sets limits," he says.
