Rabat - French construction, and engineering company Egis announced that it has signed an agreement with Morocco’s national railway office (ONCF) for the construction of the Kenitra-Marrakech high-speed railway.

In a statement published on November 8, Egis states that it is set to “assist in the external control of the 430 km Kenitra-Marrakech high-speed line.”

The French company had previously contributed to the construction of Morocco’s Kenitra-Tanger high-speed railway. The current project is set to extend the high-speed line to reach Marrakech.

According to the company’s statement, the project is made up of three phases. First a 150-kilometer-long line connecting Kenitra to Ain Sebaa is constructed. That is followed by a second line connecting Ain Sebaa to Nouaceur with a 130-kilometer-long line, and concluded with a 212-kilometer line joining Nouaceur and Marrakech.

The Kenitra-Marrakech high-speed railway project is part of Morocco’s larger vision to interconnect urban spaces and boost the country’s transportation infrastructure to support business activities.

After launching the Casablanca-Marrakech-Agadir high-speed train connection, Morocco is now aiming to open a new line linking the capital Rabat to Fez.

In July of 2022, news reports indicated that ONCF concluded feasibility studies relating to the construction of another high-speed railway connecting Fez to Rabat. The studies concern the first part of the railroad linking Rabat, Khemisset, and Meknes.

Morocco’s ambitious strategy would see the construction of 1,300 kilometers of railways linking 43 cities, according to official data quoted in converging news reports.
