[Politics] Vargas Lleras denounces 'mico' in tax: 'who benefits from the government?'

The former vice president and natural head of the Cambio Radical party, Germán Vargas Lleras, warned of a supposed 'monkey' to benefit mega-pensions from abroad in the tax reform that is currently in Congress.

"When the Government proposed to reduce the pension exemption to $6 million per month, it took the opportunity to include a proposal so that the exemption that was approved would also apply to pensions from abroad, including those from multilateral organizations," he said.

This article had already generated controversy and in principle it left the project due to an agreement with several parties. However, Vargas Lleras pointed out that, although pensions maintained the $38 million exemption, "instead of withdrawing the entire article (the Government) left the proposal so that international pensions enjoy the $38 million monthly exemption."

This, according to Vargas, means that the pensions obtained as a result of working in universities, international pension funds or by multilateral organizations, such as the IMF or the World Bank, would enjoy this benefit that is not contemplated in Colombian legislation today.

“As a result of all this back and forth, the high international pensioners earned an exemption that they did not have,” added the former vice president.

"Who is the government favoring, who are those pensioners or future pensioners who had enough power to get the Ministry of Finance to grant them such a benefit?" Lleras questioned.
