[Animals] They are 'Luna' and 'Sol': the Californian condor cubs that were born at the Chapultepec Zoo

Enya and Hulu are the names given to the Californian condor cubs that were recently born at the Chapultepec Zoo in Mexico City.
"Enya" means 'Sun' in the Kumiai language. "Hulu", meanwhile, translates to 'Moon' in Paipai. These are the names that the two new Californian condor cubs that were born at the Chapultepec Zoo in Mexico City received, by vote of the residents of the capital. Both specimens —male and female, respectively— appear to be healthy, and join the 6 babies that have spawned a pair of adults of the same species.

'Sol' was born in February 2022. In turn, 'Luna' hatched in April of the same year. Through the General Directorate of Zoos and Wildlife Conservation, the Environment Secretariat (SEDEMA) announced the births as an achievement for the persistence of the species. More than anything, because it was critically endangered in the 1980s.

More than 10 Californian condor cubs in Mexico

California condor controlled breeding efforts have been successful in the country. Proof of this are the more than 10 offspring of the species that have been born at the Chapultepec Zoo. In this regard, the Mexican authorities acknowledge that the chicks of the California Condor (Gymnogyps californianus) are the product of a joint effort with the United States:

«[THE BIRTH OF THE CALIFORNIAN CONDOR PUPS IS] THE RESULT OF THE EX SITU REPRODUCTION PROGRAM (OUTSIDE ITS PLACE OF ORIGIN) OF THIS SPECIES IN ZOOS AND WHICH IS PART OF THE BINATIONAL PROGRAM FOR THE RECOVERY AND CONSERVATION OF THE CALIFORNIA CONDOR, THROUGH A COLLABORATION WORK BETWEEN THE GOVERNMENTS OF MEXICO AND THE UNITED STATES,” HIGHLIGHTS SEDEMA.

'Sol' and 'Luna' are children of one of the couples of reproductive age that the Mexican zoo has. This is the only institution in the country that has adults who have managed to produce healthy offspring, reports SEDENA. The cases have been so successful that 4 specimens have been reintroduced to their natural habitat in northern Mexico, in Baja California.

With just a few months to live, both Californian condor cubs are in good health. They recently received the relevant vaccinations and were dewormed. These are some of the actions that the institution is carrying out hand in hand with veterinarians, biologists and specialized keepers "in order to guarantee the survival of the valuable specimens".
