About 40% of the species that inhabit the planet could become extinct due to human activities
Mass extinction is a problem that has alarmed scientists for decades. In a study published by the journal Nature in 2004, the effects that humanity had on the conservation of species warned of an alarming future. In such research, a prediction was made of the animals that would be affected over the next few decades. The authors concluded that 37% of species could be destined for extinction by 2050.

According to the Red List of Endangered Species (IUCN), 28% of the sample participants are threatened with extinction. No natural home seems safe. Both the birds that have altered their migratory routes and their bodies, as well as the strange beings that inhabit the bottom of the ocean, have been victims of the changes in their habitats.

"I THINK IT'S QUITE LIKELY," COMMENTS SCIENTIST NIC RAWLENCE OF A SIXTH MASS EXTINCTION. "AND, IF SPECIES DON'T BECOME GLOBALLY EXTINCT, THOSE WHICH CANNOT ADAPT TO OUR CHANGING WORLD ARE LIKELY TO SUFFER AREA DECREASE, SHARP PO[CENSORED]TION REDUCTIONS, AND END UP FUNCTIONALLY EXTINCTION," RAWLENCE EXPLAINED TO LIVE SCIENCE.

What is a mass extinction?

While some species evolve to survive changes in their ecosystems, others do not suffer the same fate and become extinct. More than 99% of the organisms that once inhabited the Earth, no longer exist.

According to The Conversation, a mass extinction is a loss of about three quarters of the species that exist on the entire Earth in a "short" geological period. If we take into account the vast period of time that life has been evolving on our planet, "short" could be limited to everything that is less than 2.8 million years old

β€œTHE CURRENT EXTINCTION CRISIS MAY NOT HAVE THE SCOPE OF THE BIG FIVE BUT IT IS DEFINITELY GOING THAT WAY IF NOTHING IS DONE TO STOP IT,” RAWLENCE SAYS.

During the last 500 million years, the Earth has seen five mass extinctions and it is very likely that we are about to experience a sixth due to human activities. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), endangered species are those whose po[CENSORED]tion has had a decrease of 80% to 90%. If the trend continues like this, it is likely that most of these species will not make it to the year 2050.
