  • Other Information: James was born in Middlesbrough, UK to Shirley Ashworth and Scottish father Neil Arthur. Neil was a driver and delivery man, but he was also a DJ and drummer for several years. Neil and Shirley split up when James was just one year old. James' parents hadn't spoken in over twenty years, but they had to agree to participate together in their son's audition at a family gathering to support James.
  • Arthur was first at Ings Farm Primary School in Redcar, North Yorkshire. When he was nine he moved with his mother Shirley and stepfather Ronald Rafferty to Bahrain, where he studied at the British School for four years. When they split up, James, then 14, returned to the UK with his mother Shirley and their three sisters Sian, Jasmin and Neve to live on Coast Road in Redcar. Upon his return, he continued his studies at the Ryehills School in Redcar.

  • James Arthur has been writing and recording songs since age 15 as a solo artist and in a few bands including:
  • Cue the Drama: An alternative rock band, based in Marske-by-the-Sea and active between 2005 and 2008. Recordings include "On the Radio 98KUPD", "It's Killing Me", "I Reach You" and "It Hurts".
    Save Arcade: An alternative rock band consisting of Arthur (vocals, guitar), Josh Brown (keyboards, vocals), Matthew Green (guitar), Alex Beer (bass, vocals), Travis Shaw (guitar, percussion, vocals) and Karl Downson (drums). In 2009, the band released an EP with three tracks called "The Truth", "Echoes" and "I Un-Proudly Present". In June 2010, the band released a five-track EP "Tonight We Dine in Hades", including "Superhero", "You Always Want a Fight", "Juliet Is Not Dead" and "She Aims to Please".
  • Emerald Skye:: A pop/rock band formed in March 2011, based in Redcar/Saltburn-by-the-Sea and consisting of Arthur (guitar and vocals), Dean Harrison (piano, violin), Paul Gill (bass) ) and Save Arcade bandmate Green (drums).
    James has also posted many of his songs on SoundCloud and YouTube, as well as an album titled Sins by the Sea. In 2011, he auditioned for The Voice UK but failed.
  • In early 2012, he recorded songs and released two CDs as the James Arthur Band. The band consisted of Arthur (vocals and guitar), Jez Taylor (guitar), Chris Smalls (keyboards), Jordan Swain (drums) and Rich Doney (bass). In 2012, the band released The EP Collection CD with nine tracks featuring R&B, soul and hip hop influences, a compilation of tracks from the two CDs. Arthur also released an EP called Hold On under the name 'The James Arthur Project' in August 2012 in collaboration with John McGough. The tracks were written and arranged by McGough, and mixed by Matt Wanstall with all vocals by James.
