Just a couple minutes into his effort, Shirley went off course, did a full roll, landed on his wheels basically unscathed, and managed to simply drive back onto the course and finish the race. Video from the official Pikes Peak International Hill Climb YouTube channel shows the onboard footage from the incident. In practice, Shirley had been told by observers that he was one of the most entertaining cars to watch, and his official run didn't disappoint, either. Shirley says the visibility in the lower section of the course was "next to nothing," due to fog and weather. He said he was having to drive the car at 30-40 percent pace due to track conditions. Shirley was racing in a 2014 Campbell Enterprises Single Seat IFS buggy sponsored by Yokohama Tire. The tube frame buggy took the impact like a champ, and the Geolander A/T tires made easy work of clawing back up the hillside. "This is probably the only car here that can … roll and keep on going." Shirley finished the course with a time of 13:44:532, having spent most of the climb entertainingly sideways.
