Porsche already has its new vehicle ready to compete in the endurance championships during 2023. This could be seen during the Goodwood Festival of Speed, in the United Kingdom, where the Porsche 963 GTP from Porsche Penske Racing made its public presentation.

In this hypercar Porsche includes many references to historic Porsches, especially with its iconic red, white and black paint scheme. The brand says that the 963 GTP (Grand Touring Prototype) is inspired by the Porsche 956 and 962 that raced during the 1980s.

The new 963 GTP has aerodynamic channels inside the wheel wells and other aerodynamic solutions such as the fins on the roof, also adding a single line of LED taillights that completes its belonging to the brand, with a clear nod to Porsche. current production.

As for how it fares against the competition, Porsche revealed that the car has already tested 7,889 kilometers. This is important if we look at what brands like BMW and Cadillac are doing, which have barely shown some images and apparently none have touched the asphalt yet. News from Alpine and Lamborghini are also expected, although these brands are not expected for 2023 but only for 2024.

The reason behind Porsche's leadership in the development of this vehicle has to do with Porsche and Penske agreeing to take the lead in homologating the physical car and hybrid powertrain.

This gave the team a huge advantage in testing, but has the downside that in development, Porsche had to share its data with competitors in the category to help them with their builds and implementation of the series-spec hybrid powertrain.

The Porsche 963 GTP is animated thanks to a hybrid system whose main driver is a 4.6 L V8 biturbo engine, (taken from the 918 Spyder) with a limited power of 680 Hp and is coupled to some standardized components from Bosch, Williams Advanced Engineering and Xtrac. .

Alongside the 963 GTP's debut at Goodwood, Porsche also revealed its drivers to compete in both the WEC and IMSA series, with names including André Lotterer, Laurence Vanthoor, Matt Campbell, Mathieu Jaminet, Michael Christensen, Kévin Estre, Dane Cameron and Philip Nasr.

The Porsche 963 GTP is expected to make its official track debut in January 2023 at the Rolex 24 at Daytona. Porsche also says there will be a "non-competitive dress rehearsal" for the car at the final round of the WEC season in Bahrain later this year, scheduled for November 12.
