  • Eilleen Regina Edwards was born on August 28, 1965 in Ontario, Canada. The name Eilleen came from her Irish grandmother on her mother's side, Eileen Morrison, and Regina, after her biological father's mother, Regina Edwards. Shania's grandmother Eileen was born in County Kildare, Ireland to British parents named Lottie Reeves from Wales and Frank Pierce from England. While Shania's grandmother, Eileen Morrison, was still young, the Pierces migrated to Piney, Manitoba, to start farming. As for the Edwards family, not much is known, only that they had mixed French-Canadian and native Indian backgrounds.
  • Eilleen was still a baby when her biological father Clarence Edwards abandoned the family. Her mother Sharon wanted to start over, so she packed Shania (then two years old) and her older sister and traveled 800 km to Timmins in Ontario, and it was in this rustic town that Sharon met and married Jerry Twain, an Ojibway Indian. It was at this point that Shania took the surname Twain. Sharon had no musical aspirations, but she saw a promising future for Eilleen so when Shania was still a minor, her parents took her to sing in the bars in town, but her nightly performances were a great workout and helped put food on the table. table. Shania grew up in a home marked by music and dance. She often says that in her childhood, there was no food at home, due to the family's financial condition, but there was no lack of music, Shania's father refused government help and as a consequence the family went through difficult times.
  • Moments that included starvation, Shania mentioned in her book that she wore bread bags on her feet when the family didn't have the money to buy winter footwear and domestic violence, Jerry beat Shania and Sharon in a brutal and inhumane way.
  • At the age of eight, Shania was invited to sing at a local club where she sang songs by country artists such as Waylon Jennings, Tammy Wynette, and Willie Nelson. That's when his passion for music grew even more. As a teenager, she performed in local radio and television contests. While Shania pursued a music career, her father survived, but in the early 1980s he finally found a job she liked. Jerry started a small family reforestation business. On November 1, 1987, her parents were driving back from a plantation when a tractor full of wood came in the wrong direction. With the collision they died instantly. Shania more recently revealed that after her father's death she forgave him for his past violence and abuse.
  • After the funeral, Shania stopped her music career, the older sister already had a family, so Shania took on the responsibility of raising the three younger brothers.
  • Shania sought help from a family friend: Mary Bailey, a Canadian country singer who convinced her not to give up on her career. Shania moved to Huntsville to work at a resort. But moving to Huntsville was difficult for Shania and her brothers, in a house with no electricity, no running water, but Shania survived.
  • After four years at the Deerhurst resort, Shania was ready to advance her career. When the brothers graduated Shania stated, "I feel like a 45-year-old woman at 21." And finally Shania was able to move forward and start minding her own business and go to Nashville.
  • And it was in Canada that her talent was discovered, Marie Bailey became Shania's manager and convinced a renowned artists' attorney to come from Nashville to confirm Shania's musical future.
