He has two younger brothers: Jean Rodriguez, who is also a singer, and Tatiana Rodríguez. Growing up, Fonsi showed signs that music would direct his life—as a child, he imitated the stars of the po[CENSORED]r group Menudo, and joined the San Juan Children's Choir. After living in the United States for a month, Fonsi learned to speak English without an accent. He participated in Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando, Florida and participated in a group called "Big Guys". They sang at school and local parties. One of the group's members, Joey Fatone, later joined *NSYNC. In 1995, Fonsi enrolled at Florida State University to study music.
