The Suzuki RE5 of the mid-1970s was one of the few motorcycles in the world with a Wankel (rotary) engine that was mass-produced.

Not so long ago that in the report where we talked about the 10 worst inventions in history, the Suzuki RE5 came out. A motorcycle that we did not know but that captivated us for its originality. Not only did it have an image that was unlike any other, but it also had a rotary engine. That type of propulsion is perhaps not the best but, if we may quote the final sentence of the movie Some Like It Hot (With skirts and crazy), nobody is perfect!

If we are honest, we must admit that the Suzuki RE5 was, to say the least, a controversial motorcycle. Fans were divided and not a few laughed at this model with a Wankel engine. The 70's were a time of experimentation and the Japanese brand was lucky enough to try this type of engine. Perhaps the result was not what was sought, but we applaud Suzuki for being one of the few manufacturers that put a rotary motorcycle on the market. If you look for new paths you can get lost, but there is no greater loss than staying still.

Suzuki RE5 rotary
German engineer Félix Wankel designed a unique engine that stands out for its almost liquid power delivery. It conquered many in the 70s before the problems caused by the precarious reliability of the system began to appear. The Wankel engine had no camshafts, valves or connecting rods and, in theory at least, was sheer genius...

The Suzuki RE5 you see here is a 1975 model and is for sale on the US auction website bringatrailer.com. The example uses a liquid-cooled 497cc Wankel engine with a five-speed gearbox. The current owner, who lives in Oklahoma, bought it in 2019 and fixed it up: brakes, headlight, tank, seat, carb, speedometer and turn signals. Offered with owner's manual and workshop book (which you will need...).

The unit is not in perfect condition as signs of oxidation can be seen and some appear but for almost half a century we think it is an attractive specimen that would brighten the life of any fan of classic pots. You can be sure of one thing, your friends will be impressed with the Suzuki RE5, some in a positive way and others perhaps not so much….
