He is po[CENSORED]rly known for being a member of the boy band News, having retired in 2011 to pursue a solo career. Yamashita is widely known for his many po[CENSORED]r dramas such as Nobuta Wo Produce, Kurosagi, Proposal Daisakusen, Buzzer Beat, the Code Blue series, From Five To Nine, 5-ji Kara 9-ji Made: Watashi ni Koi Shita Obōsan, and more. . His latest film, Code Blue: The Movie (2018), was the highest-grossing film of the year in 2018 and number 5 in all of the highest-grossing live-action films in Japan. Yamashita was born in Funabashi, Chiba, Japan. His parents separated when he was a child and he and his younger sister were mainly raised by their mother. Yamashita was motivated to submit his application to the talent agency Johnny & Associates after watching one of Takizawa Hideaki's television dramas and aspired to appear on television just like Takizawa. He submitted applications to many agencies, but only Johnny & Associates called him for an audition, in which he was successful and joined in 1996 at the age of eleven. He started his activities as a trainee in a group called Johnny's Jr. The group made appearances on music shows as backup dancers for their veterans, as well as appearing on NHK's Shounen Club show. Several years after joining the agency, Yamashita became one of the most po[CENSORED]r members. After Takizawa Hideaki debuted as duo-group Tackey & Tsubasa in 2003, Yamashita was named the leader of Johnny's Jr. Yamashita made his acting debut in 1998 in NHK's Shonentachi. In 1999, he participated in other productions and gained greater po[CENSORED]rity after appearing in Ikebukuro West Gate Park on TBS in 2000.
