He is po[CENSORED]rly known for being a member of the boy band News, having retired in 2011 to pursue a solo career.

He submitted applications to many agencies, but only Johnny & Associates called him for an audition, in which he was successful and joined in 1996 at the age of eleven. He started his activities as a trainee in a group called Johnny's Jr. The group made appearances on music shows as backup dancers for their veterans, as well as appearing on NHK's Shounen Club show. Several years after joining the agency, Yamashita became one of the most po[CENSORED]r members. After Takizawa Hideaki debuted as duo-group Tackey & Tsubasa in 2003, Yamashita was named the leader of Johnny's Jr.
