[Politics] Castro (PS) questions quorum of 2/3 to make changes to the new Constitution: "It is incredible and an abuse of democracy"

The socialist senator questioned the sectors of the left that have promoted this measure, pointing out that "the same ones who said that it was a supra-majority quorum are now putting a lock on it

The senator of the PS, Juan Luis Castro, expressed his criticism on Tuesday towards the position of the left sectors of the Constitutional Convention to propose a quorum of 2/3 for eventual reforms to the new text in the next three years: it is an abuse of democracy, he assured. In an interview with Radio Pauta, the parliamentarian lamented that "there are some majorities that are hegemonizing the Constituent Assembly and that they have even planned these laws of the 2/3 bolt, that nothing of what is left is not touched, which is an abuse. , because they are the same 2/3 of the Constitution of '80".

"The same ones who said that this was a supramajoritarian quorum put a lock on it now. The discourse of some sectors of the left is incredible, I am very surprised that those who uphold all the contents of the new democracy, when it comes time to say what we are going to do with the new Constitution, they place it little less than under lock and key so that no one touches it for the next 4 years," he questioned. In his opinion, "it is incredible and an abuse of democracy and I hope that it will be modified in plenary. No Constitution in Chile, in its republican times, has stopped being reformed. It is typical of a democracy that the Fundamental Charter can be reformed , another thing is to discuss the quorum, the majority that is required, but when has it been a kind of untouchable work".

Likewise, Castro expressed that "it is a serious mistake to end the Senate, when there is a presidential system like the one that is being outlined in the Constitution, a system with practically a single strong chamber and what has been said, of a Chamber of the Regions, which still looks very precarious in its design and in the strength it has to be a counterweight to the power of the Executive." "I would not like a Venezuelan-style regime, where there is absolute power and there is no democracy with a single Chamber. Nor a system like the Peruvian one, which is presidential, with a President elected by the majority, but with a Congress in a Chamber, where that President every other week is hanging by a thread because he is adverse and they can remove him at any time," he warned. According to the socialist legislator, "that is political instability in the Peruvian case and it is autocracy in the Venezuelan case. I would not like Chile to experience those paths and I still have some hope that there would be some amendment, because I believe that this reform justly bases the maximalist idea of some leftist groups which is not what the country requires in today's times"
