Having debuted in 2000 with the single "Take Back", Koda gained fame for his seventh single, "Real Emotion/1000 no Kotoba", the songs of which were used as themes for the Playstation 2 game Final Fantasy X-2. His po[CENSORED]rity grew with the release of his fourth studio album Secret (2005), his sixteenth single "Butterfly" (2005), and his first greatest hits album Best: First Things (2005), peaking at number three, number two. and number one location, respectively. Although her first releases presented a conservative and quiet image, from 2003 onwards Koda adopted a sexier and more provocative style. Due to this image, she became a fashion leader among young women, creating trends such as the ero-kakkoii style. She has also won many fashion awards such as the "Best Jeanist Award" and the title of "Nail Queen" annually since 2006. Since her rise in po[CENSORED]rity, Koda has lent her face and music to many advertisements. In 2006 and 2007, Oricon certified Koda as the biggest selling artist of the year. Koda has sold over 15 million physical records in Japan alone, making her the 18th best-selling Japanese female solo artist of all time. In July 2012, the singer gave birth to a boy, the son of the vocalist and guitarist of the Japanese band BACK-ON, artistically known as KENJI03.Koda was born into a family of musicians. His grandfather was a shakuhachi master and his mother was a koto teacher; she is the older sister of Misono, a current solo artist and former lead singer of Day After Tomorrow. Inspired by her mother, who performed in karaoke bars, Koda, from an early age, had aspirations to become a singer. His school years were unhappy; she described her high school years as "dark times", as she was mocked due to her "fat", "ugliness", and other factors related to her appearance. During her sophomore year of high school, Koda auditioned for Avex's "Dream Audition", where she placed second out of 120,000 participants. She was then signed to the Avex Rhythm Zone sub-label. Koda's first semi-biographical book, Koda-shiki ("Koda style") was officially described as "a story about a girl who was full of inferiority complexes chasing her way".
