[Politics] PPD and PS reject Sharp's criticism of Boric for allying with former Concertación: "They are not well supported" and "simpleton analysis"

Recommended Posts

There were various reactions to the statements made by the mayor of Valparaíso, Jorge Sharp, who was critical of some of the decisions made by the Government of President Gabriel Boric. In an interview with El Mercurio, the community chief was asked about how difficult it is for the Executive to govern with two coalitions (on the one hand I approve of Dignity and on the other, democratic socialism that includes parties like the PS), and he replied that "Faced with the crossroads of broadening the political and social base, the government made the decision to expand to the former Coalition, and I think that is a mistake."

This, since in his opinion, "is to govern with people who for 30 years had their opportunity to govern." For the same reason, he recognized that "without a doubt" citizen movements should have been privileged. "In his opinion, does it complicate that the PS or the PPD, who governed with the Concertación, are in office?" Faced with this question, Sharp assured that "the Government has chosen this path. It will be necessary to see if it works or not. Therefore, I prefer, before making a categorical value judgment, to wait for what happens. But it is evident that the Government took a path and that is to ally with the former Coalition. All the incorporations to the ministerial teams are very coherent with that strategic decision". "It has been pointed out that it made sense to build a robust majority in the legislature. It is something that remains to be seen. With regard to what took place in the fifth retreat, both the limited and the unlimited, it seems that this is not the case. "It is a bet, I do not agree with that bet, and I know that many people who voted for Boric do not agree. It may be that the strategy will give results. The issue is that an agenda of changes as important and profound as the one that The country demands, in social rights, security, territories, it needs to be pushed by the actors who believe in these transformations, and the actors who believe in these transformations are not in the leadership of the former Concertación," he asserted. In this regard, the president of the Party for Democracy (PPD) Natalia Piergentilli, told Emol that "I do not share what Mayor Sharp points out that we did not make the changes as if there were no transforming will, and that is not effective. It is no news to anyone that the great locks on a welfare state is the Constitution, which with a binomial system was insurmountable." "That caricature," she added, "that the former Coalition is the cause of all evils, is not analyzing that the evils we are facing are still anchors of the dictatorship." Along the same lines, the senator of the party, Loreto Carvajal, pointed out that the President was elected "with one of the highest majorities not only historically, but also at the citizen level, which meant an expanded database, a expanded base of support that was reflected in the formula that he has had to govern".

"I believe that it is not only validated, but within what a ruler who has a vision of the state means, it means encompassing his support base beyond his own coalitions. It is indisputable that with only Approve Dignity he would not have won the election and I think that the President in his administration has realized that, he has been sufficiently humble, sensible and statesmanlike," he said. For the same reason, he assured that the comments of the mayor of Valparaíso "are not well supported", on the contrary, in his opinion he believes that "greater unity, greater coordination must be generated".

"Substantive issues such as security obviously have no political ideology, certainly the economy as well. In this context, it seems to me that the PPD has been available, will continue to be, fully supporting the decisions of President Boric, who is the President of all Chileans and not only of I Approve Dignity," he stressed. From the Socialist Party, the president (s) Andrés Santander, indicated that "it is necessary to govern with those who have a vocation for the majority and not for the minority. Mayor Sharp prefers to defend his ideological position, even at the cost of not fulfilling what was promised, because to moving forward required a broader base and that is how the President understood it". In addition, he maintained that "a country is not governed solely with good intentions. The mayor's analysis is simple and his councils somewhat arrogant, considering that his municipal administration has been deficient, questioned in different areas and a minority in the municipal council, facing even processes for notable abandonment of duties".

Lastly, the socialist senator, Gastón Saavedra, said he had the impression that the mayor "forgot what happened in the elections in the first round, where the transformative program and the president-elect was defeated by the far-right candidate and He came out second." "That is not a minor fact that should not be overlooked," he clarified and specified that "then in the analysis, it is about building majorities to govern and make the changes that the country requires." "When you have a minority and it is not accepted and it is about excluding political forces that are also democratic and aspire to change, the difference is perhaps tactical, because we think that this has to be gradual, it allows the country to move forward towards changes of a strategic nature and that considers overcoming at the appropriate moment, situations of poverty, social exclusion and false territorial equality", he pointed out. In his opinion, "it is therefore about broadening the base of President Boric's government, without excluding or having exclusive visions, which do not contribute to giving him the political and social validation that the President requires to advance his program." . According to Saavedra, Sharp's "biased vision" "does not contribute to carrying out a unitary enlargement process that contributes to the formation of a majority for the changes in the country." In addition, he said that "it is clear that the electoral results that the citizens delivered have not been internalized: that it left a practically tied Congress, so you need to adapt to the situations in order to move forward."
