[Animals] Chileans adopt more and more cats: National registry reveals the favorite names in the country

Luna, Princesa and Pelusa are some of the most chosen ways to name cats and also dogs.

After completing three years of operation, the National Registry of Pets revealed an increase in the adoption of cats, what are the most common names and that Chilean guardians usually prefer a mestizo pet to a purebred one.

As for felines, there was a significant variation in the country, since in 2020 there were 42,000 adopted cats and that figure increased to more than 50,000 in 2021, according to the National Registry of Subdere.

Of a total of 1,862,092 dogs and cats registered, 231,166 animals were purchased while the rest were adopted, collected, received as gifts or born at home.

Dogs (male and female) sterilized are 599,107, while in cats this figure reaches 341,639, according to the registry.

María Paz Troncoso, Undersecretary of Regional and Administrative Development, points out that "we work around the comprehensive care of our pets, and the increase in registrations confirms the work that has been achieved through the transfer of funds to NGOs, municipalities and regional governments of the entire national territory".

This year, Luna was again the name preferred by Chileans to baptize dogs and cats, who share other frequent names such as Pelusa and Princesa.

Likewise, the National Registry of Pets showed that more than 57% of Chileans prefer to share their lives with a mestizo pet over a purebred one.

After the so-called "quilters", the top five in dog breeds are completed by the Poodle, German Shepherd, Yorkshire Terrier and the Dachsund, also known as "sausage".

Troncoso adds that "pets have become an important part of Chilean families and we are glad that their guardians are responsible and have made registration a habit."

"There are still important challenges to face, such as people understanding the importance of sterilizing their pets to protect the community and the environment," warns the authority.
