FNX Magokiler
The survey revealed that low rates of sterilization in dogs persist and guardians must spend more time on their walks. It was shown that 58.7 per cent of dog guardians include them in the holiday trip, while this figure is 26 per cent for cat guardians. There is no doubt that pets are part of our families and that they contribute to our happiness, that is one of the conclusions of the unprecedented National Survey of Responsible Ownership carried out by the Subdere in support of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Catholic University. "Animals have become one more member of the family that contributes to our happiness. Those who choose to receive a pet do so mainly through adoption. These are the most important data that the first national pet survey gave us," highlighted today the Undersecretary of Regional and Administrative Development, María Paz Troncoso. The authority did comment that "this same survey alerts us that, although the vast majority consider themselves a responsible guardian, low rates of sterilization in dogs persist and guardians must spend more time on their walks. In this framework, we do a call to reinforce responsibility and consider all the necessary aspects for our pet to live healthy and happy, this is a way with which we can also repay all the love that they give us". A total of 147,906 responses were received and analyzed by Subdere and the UC and yielded relevant data such as: that there are more guardians of dogs (75.6 percent) than of cats (24.4 percent); 44.1 percent of dog guardians have it by adoption or by picking it up, while this data is given by 73.6 percent in cat owners. Likewise, it was shown that 58.7 percent of dog guardians include them in the vacation trip, while this figure is 26 percent with respect to cat guardians. Regarding the importance of pets for the respondents. 99.7 percent of cat and dog guardians say their pet is part of their family and contributes to their happiness. Another of the results that the study showed was that 77.5 percent of dog guardians reside at home and of them, 52 percent even sleep with them in their beds. While 70 percent of cat guardians reside at home and of this number, 69 percent sleep with them. IMPROVE RESPONSIBLE OWNERSHIP The national manager of the Subdere Protected Pet program, Carolina Guerrero, stressed that with this survey "we already know an important piece of information, which is that they are considered as one of the family, which confirms that today families are 'multispecies' However, it also confirms that we must reinforce factors of sterilization, walks, supervision, among others, which as a program, without a doubt, we will consider to support the community and its responsible ownership." Although 98.7 percent of the people who answered the survey claim to take their pet to the vet, only 61.2 percent of dogs are sterilized, unlike cats, which lead this figure with 92.8 percent. Regarding the habit of giving them a walk, dog tutors, only 36.1 percent say they do it once a day, while 29.2 percent do it only once a week. In the case of cats, only 18 percent go out with them. Similarly, 90 percent of the dogs identified in this survey are registered in the National Pet Registry, while in cats the percentage drops to 74.5 percent. https://www.cooperativa.cl/noticias/pais/medioambiente/animales/las-mascotas-son-parte-de-la-familia-y-contribuyen-a-nuestra-felicidad/2022-01-20/164810.html
