Rabat - The Moroccan Ministry of Islamic Affairs announced Sunday, April 3 as the first day of the holy month of Ramadan in Morocco.

In a statement, the ministry announced that the moon was not seen on April 1, meaning that the first day of Ramadan will take place on Sunday.

Ramadan, the ninth month in the Islamic calendar, is one of the holiest events in Islam.

Throughout Ramadan, which lasts 29 or 30 days, Muslims abstain from eating and drinking from dawn to sunset.

Muslims cannot also smoke, take non-prescribed medicine, or chew gum during the fasting hours.

Only people with illnesses requiring medication and the elderly are exempted from fasting.

Children who have not reached puberty are also exempt from fasting.

During Ramadan, Muslims across the world are increasing charitable activities as well as spiritual engagement.

The holy month is marked by special prayers called Taraweeh. Muslims perform Taraweeh at mosques after isha (night) prayer.

In the past few years, however, Moroccans were not able to perform the prayers at mosques because of  COVID-19 restrictions.

In 2020, Morocco announced a total lockdown, including a curfew, prohibiting all prayers at mosques.

In 2021, however, Morocco allowed prayers at mosques, except for Taraweeh, as part of Morocco’s anti-COVID campaign.

It remains to be seen whether Morocco will allow Taraweeh prayers at mosques this year.

Many countries announced April 2 as the first day of Ramadan, including Saudi Arabia and the UAE, among others.

About two billion Muslims observe Ramadan across the world.

Morocco World News is wishing Moroccans and all Muslims across the world a Ramadan Mubarak Kareem!
