Waymo's self-driving cars take over the streets of San Francisco

Waymo is starting to operate self-driving taxis in San Francisco with no one behind the wheel.

 

The company said in a statement that its self-driving cars are ready to run under the Waymo Driver program, describing it as a "major step on the road to deploying a fully autonomous commercial service."

 

Waymo, which is owned by Alphabet like Google, has not announced when it will begin phasing out so-called "safety drivers" in San Francisco.

 

Waymo has been running some versions of its rental car service in San Francisco since February 2021, when it launched a fleet of automated taxis exclusively for its employees.

 

The company expanded the service in August to a limited group of San Francisco residents known as "trusted testers."

 

Waymo is improving its driving program and lobbying for government approvals to launch an entirely driverless car rental service that is open to the entire city.
