The Ministry of Economy wants to tackle the crisis that the Unicaja Foundation is going through. The Protectorate of Banking Foundations has published a letter to the Unicaja Foundation in which it acknowledges having "serious doubts" that its president, Braulio Medel, has "the necessary commercial and professional suitability and honorability to perform his duties."

The Protectorate of Banking Foundations, dependent on the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, began an investigation as a result of the letters received from four trustees of the Unicaja Foundation to challenge the agreement of the meeting, by which the four directors who were appointed were renewed. the foundation has in Unicaja Banco. The Protectorate also received complaints and reports from the Inter-Union Credit Confederation (CIC) and from the Salvemos Unicaja Platform.

In addition, the Protectorate acknowledges that it has "doubts" that Medel is exercising its functions for the exclusive benefit of the Foundation's interests and carrying out an "adequate" management of its participation in the shareholding of Unicaja Banco, for which it has established it to convene an extraordinary meeting in which an independent report is commissioned from an entity chosen by agreement of all the members of the board of trustees to determine whether the president of the Foundation continues to meet the requirements to hold the position of trustee.

According to the newspaper El Confidencial, the Protectorate has also published the letter to the Bank of Spain and the European Central Bank (ECB), in their capacity as supervisors of Unicaja Banco, of which the Unicaja Foundation controls 30.236% of the share capital.
