As two years have passed since the start of the pandemic, from the municipality of Vicente López they ask the Buenos Aires governor Axel Kicillof to put an end to the use of mandatory chinstrap in the schools of the Province at all levels, a measure that at the time It was adopted to avoid an increase in infections by COVID-19.

Soledad Martínez, mayor of Vicente López, yesterday sent a request to the Buenos Aires governor - with a copy to his chief of staff, Martín Insaurralde - to review the current sanitary measures in schools in the province of Buenos Aires. “I am writing to you for the purpose of requesting the review of the sanitary measures established by Joint Resolution 245/2022 of the General Directorate of Culture and Education and the Ministry of Health, in relation to the mandatory use of a chinstrap/mask in educational establishments, of all levels and modalities, whether state-run or private, of the Vicente López Party”, begins the note sent by Martínez.

In this sense, the successor of Jorge Macri at the head of the municipality of Vicente López raises the need to adopt "new measures appropriate to the current health context, marked by the reduction in infections and the decrease in the transmission of COVID-19".

For the education of students at all levels, Martínez considers "essential the link and exchange with teachers, to be able to listen to them clearly and see their gestures, to develop skills."

In her letter, Martínez also highlighted the importance that the use of the chinstrap in Buenos Aires schools is no longer mandatory so that children do not suffer emotional and health consequences. “It is known that the use of the chinstrap affects social interaction and the emotional aspects of children, young people and adolescents, and that its prolonged use also produces adverse effects such as headaches or respiratory distress, which make it difficult to learning”, argued his request.

Due to the fact that the COVID-19 pandemic has not yet come to an end, Martínez proposes “the adoption of new measures, such as the optional use of the chinstrap/mask, that contemplate the socio-emotional well-being of children, young people and adolescents, and prioritize their educational development, and that they are consistent with the current health situation, also taking into account that face-to-face classes do not represent a greater risk of contagion from the virus.

To give her request greater publicity, the mayor of Vicente López appealed to her Twitter account and sent a direct message to Governor Kicillof. “It is time to lift the mandatory face mask in schools. After 2 years of pandemic we can trust the criteria of each family. Since classes started, in Vicente López, many boys have a bad time, ”she wrote.

The suggestion made by Martínez goes hand in hand with the decision that was made in the City of Buenos Aires, where from this Monday the use of a chinstrap in schools is no longer mandatory. In this way, the measure that until now only applied to children from kindergarten to the third year of primary school, now reaches the students of the rest of the levels.

However, this element of protection will continue to be a requirement for teachers and for the rest of the educational personnel in the Buenos Aires educational establishments.

Until now, the province of Mendoza was the only jurisdiction that had made the use of face masks more flexible in schools. In the first instance, it had only been done with kindergarten and primary school children, but as in the City, as of this week, secondary school students will not require them to wear a mask in class either.
