Although it was known long before that Maserati wanted to have an SUV below the Levante, it was not until the unveiling of the MC20 sports car at the end of 2020 that something of the future model of the trident brand could be seen. On that occasion, a teaser was revealed, his name and it was learned that he would have electrified versions.

The Grecale, whose name also comes from an air current in the Mediterranean Sea (like Mistral, Ghibli, Bora, Merak, Khamsin and Levante), is officially here, but not without having to overcome some problems in its development. , which delayed this uncovering for at least six months.

And it is that after the merger of FCA with PSA for the birth of Stellantis, all plans had to be modified to meet the requirements of the new administration. And the most important is electrification. Although it was always known that the Grecale would have a plug-in hybrid variant, the initial technology was not up to what is expected for a brand like Maserati, and everything had to be started from scratch.

But here it is, the Grecale in glory and majesty, showing itself in its three characteristic versions, the sporty Trofeo, the elegant Modena and the most modern GT, but with the novelty of the debut of the Folgore variant, the name of the new electrified range of the brand, although it is not released for several more months. There will also be a PrimaSeries variant at launch.

The Maserati Grecale was developed at the Maserati Innovation Laboratory in Modena and is produced at the Cassino plant, going on sale in the second half of 2022, at least in Europe.

Maserati Grecale: the mechanics
As you can see in the photo, the Grecale is a midsize SUV 4,846mm long, 2,163mm wide (with mirrors), 1,670mm tall, and 2,901mm between axles. Compared to a Levante, it's 16cm shorter and has 10cm less wheelbase, but it's also slightly narrower and lower.

It will be available with a wide range of engines, both internal combustion, mild hybrids and, within a year, the 100% electric Folgore.
