Spartak Moscow was excluded from the Europa League in retaliation by UEFA for the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The club had to play the round of 16 against Leipzig, in games scheduled for March 10 and 17

Spartak Moscow has issued a statement on Monday in which it shows its displeasure at being eliminated from the Europa League after a decision by UEFA and FIFA with which they assure that it does not agree, but must comply, and ensures that the sport “should build bridges, not burn them”.

FIFA and UEFA will jointly decide on Monday whether to suspend Russian national teams and clubs from participating in each other's competitions until further notice.

Thus, Spartak is excluded from the current Europa League competition, so the round of 16 tie against Leipzig, which were scheduled for March 10 and 17, will not be played. The German team automatically qualifies for the quarterfinals.

“The decision of FIFA and UEFA has upset us, although it was expected. Unfortunately, our team's efforts in this Europa League competition are undermined for reasons as far removed from sport as possible."

“Spartak has millions of fans not only in Russia, but all over the world. Our successes and failures bring people from dozens of different countries together, and even in the most difficult times, sport, from the club's point of view, should build bridges, not burn them."

“Another decision has been made that we do not agree with but that we have to abide by. Spartak will focus on playing the Russian championship and the Cup of the country. We hope to achieve the peace that we all need as soon as possible”, he concludes.
