Richard Carapaz from Carchen won the title of champion in the individual time trial held this Friday at the Mitad del Mundo, in Quito, as part of the national cycling championships. The runner of the British team Ineos Grenadiers recovered from a COVID-19 infection last weekend and was at the starting line together with a group of eight runners who opted for this modality. Carapaz appeared 47 minutes 21 seconds to complete the 38.2 kilometers of the route, in a circuit that was accompanied by a massive crowd that saw the Olympic champion in action. This test marked the return to an official competition of Carapaz in the country, after his performance in the Tour of Ecuador 2014, when he placed second overall. La Locomotive dethroned Jorge Montenegro, also from Carchense, leader of the continental team Banco Guayaquil-Ecuador, who in the end was in second place, 2 minutes 3 seconds away. In third place came his teammate Alexis Quintero, with a difference of 3 minutes 20 seconds from Carapaz. "I am happy for this title, for the things that have happened in recent weeks, with the falls in competition and the contagion of the last week," said Carapaz, who adds his first national title. The test was also run in the men's under-23 category, with Lenin Montenegro (Banco Guayaquil-Ecuador) as the winner. The Carchense runner was 36 minutes 37 seconds for the 28.65 kilometer route. Titles in ladies The imbabureña Paula Jara debuted in the Team Banco Guayaquil-Ecuador with the title in the elite women's category after beating a small batch of seven runners. The new monarch of the national CRI imposed a time of 44 minutes 12 seconds in the 28.65 kilometer route. Jara got on the podium with Esther Galarza, second at 11 seconds, and Michela Molina, at 1 minute 47 seconds. In the sub-23 category, the winner was the Azuaya Ana Vivar, from Movistar-Best PC, with 42 minutes 31 seconds, the best overall time of the day among the ladies. In this division, second place went to Carol Masabanda (Banco Guayaquil-Ecuador) and third place went to Marcela Peñafiel from Movistar-Best PC. The two categories in ladies traveled 28.65 kilometers. The national championship continues this Sunday with the online road test that will be run around the Atahualpa Olympic Stadium, with a 9.6-kilometer circuit. The men's elite category opens the day at 08:00, to complete a 162-kilometer route, with performances by Carapaz, Jonathan Caicedo (EF Education-EasyPost) and defending champion Alexander Cepeda (Drone Hopper-Androni Giocattoli), among the Main figures.
