Senegal won the African Nations Cup for the first time in its history after beating Egypt 4-2 on penalties on Sunday in the Cameroonian capital Yaounde.

 

The two teams were unable to score over 120 minutes, after their players raced to waste all the opportunities that came to them over the four games, especially the Senegalese team, who missed a penalty kick in the fifth minute by Sadio Mane, to resort to the penalty shootout, which finally smiled for the team. Senegal had participated in the final twice in the 2002 and 2019 editions, but failed to win the tournament by losing to Cameroon and Algeria, respectively, while this is the second consecutive final that Egypt has lost, after losing to Cameroon in the 2017 edition of the competition in Gabon.Egypt became the first team in the history of African nations to play overtime in 4 consecutive matches in the playoffs in one version of the competition, after playing against Ivory Coast, Morocco, Cameroon and Senegal.

 

The date between the two teams is scheduled to be renewed next March, as they clash in the final stage of the African qualifiers for the World Cup scheduled in Qatar this year.

 

The first leg will be held in Cairo, while the second leg will take place in the Senegalese capital, Dakar, from 24 to 29 of next month.

 

The match began with an intense attack by the Senegalese team, who got an early penalty in the third minute, after Mohamed Abdel Moneim blocked Sadio Mane inside the Egyptian penalty area.
