Gabriela Dancau, Romania's outgoing ambassador to Spain, takes stock of her mandate on the same day that her stay in Madrid ends and she begins her new stage as representative of her country in Rome. In the midst of the crisis in its neighboring country, Ukraine, with Russia, Dancau also explains Bucharest's position in the conflict, after the deployment of US troops in Eastern Europe.

 

How do you assess your mandate as Romanian ambassador in Madrid?

 

When I took office as ambassador in 2016, I took on several main objectives: to make the Romanian-Spanish Strategic Partnership operational, to promote commercial and economic cooperation, to facilitate access for Romanian citizens to quality services from the Embassy and Consular Offices and promote Romanian culture in the Hispanic sphere. I think that at all these levels I can say without modesty that we have made important progress that has made the relationship between Romania and Spain more visible. In 2020, the coronavirus pandemic broke out and diplomatic activity was adapted to certain special needs. I think that the most difficult moment at the head of the diplomatic mission was, without a doubt, the start of the Covid-19 pandemic with the difficulties that come with acting without security protocols in the face of an unknown virus. We faced the fears and uncertainties of an important part of the community of more than a million Romanian citizens living in Spain, it was not an easy time to manage. I can say that it was an experience that will accompany me for the rest of my life, I cannot forget the organization of the repatriation of tens of thousands of Romanians, as well as the help given to many people in a critical period and I believe that diplomacy was more active than ever, certainly fulfilling its role of responding to people's interests and protecting them in difficult situations.
