If you find yourself having to go outside during a winter storm, such as the one predicted this week, we recommend that you carry these items in your car to help you deal with the cold, rain, wind, ice and snow.

Dust to de-ice the road
While cities generally de-ice roads, sidewalks, parking lots and concrete steps on private property are not within their purview. If you are faced with extreme conditions, such as a slippery sidewalk where the ice has melted and refrozen, a little de-icing powder can make your walk less hazardous.

Cat Litter
When stuck in the snow, the best thing to do is to put your car in a low gear and accelerate slowly so the wheels have the best chance to gain traction. If the wheels spin too fast, your car could end up deeper in the snow. To get that extra bit of traction, you can sprinkle some kitty litter under your tires to give the treads some friction so they can pull your car out of the snow jam.

Windshield defroster antifreeze.
A good spray de-icer can solve countless problems. Spray it on the windshield to break up ice and frost, especially useful if your car's defroster isn't working properly. Also apply it to headlights and taillights to keep them from freezing and losing their shine. It's a good idea to keep a small container of antifreeze fluid in your purse, backpack or briefcase for those times when your car locks freeze and you can't get in.

Blankets and clothing
There are a number of electric heated blankets that can be plugged into a 12-volt outlet found in most automobiles. Look for a blanket that is large enough to keep two people warm and has a cord long enough to reach the back seat.

It's also a good idea to carry extra clothing in your car so you can cover up in case you get stuck for a few hours on the road.

Emergency flashlights
Signal with lights that you're in trouble and need help. Even in the worst weather, a couple of reliable emergency flashlights are a great solution. There are flashlights that are waterproof and shockproof, and each is equipped with a strong magnet that allows mounting on steel car panels.
