The tourism sector in 2021 reported a decrease in the arrival of international visitors (VI) and in tourism income (IT) amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Minister of Tourism of Panama, Iván Eskildsen said that after two difficult years, they estimate that this 2022 will reach 1.8 million travelers, reports Panama America.

“We expect those travelers to spend more as well as stay longer. We have been working on different fairs together with Promtur in order to achieve that goal this year », he stated.

He indicated that the first 9 months of 2021 were very difficult because the po[CENSORED]tion was not vaccinated, hospitals were full and mobility restrictions were strong. On the other hand, the last three months of the year saw a substantial increase in travelers arriving in the country and gave us optimism to start 2022 well.

He assured that this tourism industry promises a lot for the future of the country.

Meanwhile, tourist income reached US$1,801.1 million, which represents an increase of 89.8% compared to the same period last year.

According to figures from the ATP, the travelers who arrive the most to the country are: Central America +44.8%, South America +32.7%, Europe +16.7%, Asia +100.1%, North America + 21.1%, Africa +60.2% and Oceania -38.5% and the Antilles -26.4% decreased.

It is worth mentioning that due to the new variants of COVID-19, the entry of visitors from the countries of South America and North America have been affected to Panama, mainly Brazil, Argentina, Colombia and the United States, which have become restrictions, both outbound and inbound.
