China's ambassador to the US, Qin Gang, said this Thursday, during an interview with US National Public Radio, that both countries could be "involved in a military conflict" if Washington backs the attempts to Taiwanese separatist forces to seek independence.

"The Taiwan issue is the biggest tinderbox between China and the US. If the Taiwanese authority, emboldened by the US, continues down the path of independence, it will most likely involve China and the US, the two big countries, in a military conflict," Qin said, adding that Beijing "does not want to have a conflict or confrontation with the US."

He also pointed out that they will do their utmost "to achieve peaceful reunification" with the island, believing that it is "in the best interests" of Taiwan residents, as well as for Sino-American relations and peace and stability in the region. .
Qin also stressed that "people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are Chinese," considering them as his compatriots, therefore the Chinese government refrains from fighting against them.

"So let us work together to contain Taiwan's separatist forces, to give peace a chance. May peace prevail," Qin urged.

"We hope that a good relationship [with the US] will be established based on the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and mutually beneficial cooperation," he concluded.

This is the first interview granted to US media by Qin Gang, 55, who took over as ambassador in June 2021, replacing Cui Tiankai, who held the post for 8 years.

Beijing regards Taiwan as an inalienable part of its territory. Throughout 2021, the situation around the island caused a series of tensions in relations between China and the US, which despite recognizing the 'one China' policy, continues to maintain contacts with Taipei
