Beyond the specific circumstances of the pandemic, there is a notable change in trend: there are more and more domestic dogs and cats, fewer children and more adults living alone. And although there is no academic study that explains in detail the reasons that have driven this pet boom, those involved in the sector agree in mentioning the drop in birth rates and the increase in loneliness as key factors in this change.

Part of this gap to explain this phenomenon is also due to the fact that there is no single state registry that allows tracking the number of pets. In the absence of official data, the most up-to-date state figures on pets are offered by ANFAAC, the National Association of Pet Food Manufacturers, the only organization that carries out a biannual survey to estimate the number of dogs and cats currently in Spain. . According to this source, from 2019 to 2021 the number of dogs has increased by 38%, going from 6.7 to 9.3 million, and that of cats by 38%, going from 3.7 to 5.8 million.

The ANFAAC estimates do not coincide exactly with those extracted from the companion animal registries of each autonomous community, which are obliged to identify and count pets. Although most of them do not make public the number of registered, La Vanguardia has requested the data from each community. The information collected and analyzed for this article indicates that there would currently be a total of 8.2 million dogs and 6.4 million cats in Spain, a figure lower than the 9.3 dogs and higher than the 5.4 felines that points out the sectoral organization. Even so, from the Veterinary Colleges that are in charge of managing these registries, they point out that these figures must be taken with caution because there are no effective control mechanisms that ensure their reliability: there are many owners who do not register their dogs and others who forget to give them low after death.
