Destroyer 05, this is the name of the brand's new sedan that stands out for having a somewhat wider range than other plug-in hybrids.

Plug-in hybrids usually have a range of electric autonomy close to 50-60 kilometers, which means that if you want to maximize that margin, you should plan a little in which part of your route it is more convenient to use it. But the Chinese advance very fast in terms of batteries and today you can already find cars that double that number, something that helps a lot to mitigate the anxiety generated by the exhaustion of the batteries.

We are talking about the BYD Destroyer 05, a car that before anything else, powerfully draws attention for its aggressive name. When have we ever seen a sedan called itself "the destroyer"? Well, if there is one thing that the Chinese still struggle with, it is adapting to the idiosyncrasies and cultural details of Western countries. We would only be able to put "destroyer" on a 4x4 truck or a hyper exotic sports car. But hey, the BYD Destroyer 05 is so named because it is part of a family of BYD models inspired by the world of the sea and the ocean. Electric cars are named after marine animals and the hybrids of this family are named after warships, therefore it refers to a military ship.

BYD's "Destroyer" is a big car, though it doesn't look like it by design. It is very close to the Audi A4 or a Peugeot 508, so that you have a reference. In other words, it participates in segment D.

Its design language is called "Marine Aesthetics" although it is difficult to see what is really "marine" in its design. The grille takes a bit from the Peugeot books in the sense that today the fashion is to remove the frame from the grille and integrate it into the bumper with chrome segments. The headlights are slim and are joined by a decorative appliqué bearing the BYD insignia. On the back, we have very thin and continuous LED skulls, which go through the gate and wear a transparent lens. It is a modern, attractive, but generic car.

The interior is committed to minimalism and we can find two screens where the 8.8 "instrument panel and the multimedia interface are concentrated, although this screen is brutally large, with 15.6" in size. The rest of the commands are housed in a lower module with a rotary dial for transmission and other commands for driving aids and extra functions. The perceived quality looks top-notch, at least in the photos and with blue ambient lighting for style.

BYD Destroyer 05: The Powertrain

BYD's biggest development in electromobility is its Blade batteries, which are very thin, indestructible and have a lot of density. Obviously the Destroyer 05 was not going to be without this technology. The brand has not indicated more characteristics of the packs that the Destroyer 05 will carry, but there will be two sizes for two autonomies, 55 kilometers in the smallest capacity and 120 kilometers in the most powerful.

These batteries are associated with the brand's DM-i PHEV powertrain, which consists of a 1.5 engine with 109 Hp and two electric motors of different power. With the low specification engine the sum is 177 Hp, while with the more powerful unit it is 194 Hp.

The Destroyer 05 is the first sedan in this family of models inspired by the world of the sea and it will surely not be the last, as BYD evolves its product line towards more sophisticated models.
