The Minister of Po[CENSORED]r Power for Foreign Relations of Venezuela, Felix Plasencia, criticized on January 8 the statements of Colombia on the "opportunistic silence" of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) in the face of the democratic crisis that some countries of the region.

In his Twitter account, the foreign minister pointed out that Bogotá "seems to denounce itself, in the face of so many human rights violations committed in 2021" by the government of Iván Duque.

"We welcome that, finally, Duque's representative has participated in the Celac meeting without sneaking out the back door, as she did in Mexico," said Felix Plasencia. In addition, he stressed that the neighboring country, once again, exercises "its sad role as spokesman for the United States in defense of the reigning coup in the OAS."

Plasencia's statements come shortly after the XXII Meeting of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Celac, held in Buenos Aires and where Argentina assumed the temporary presidency.

During the event, the Colombian vice president and foreign minister, Marta Lucía Ramírez, questioned the silence of the organization in the face of the alleged "breakdown of the democratic order" in some countries.

"We cannot have opportunistic silences in the face of fundamental values that were and will always be and everywhere, such as the defense of democracy, freedoms and human rights and as they have been for this same Celac in the recent past. ", highlighted the senior official in her speech, read by the Deputy Minister of Multilateral Affairs, María Carmelina Londoño.
