Changes in sleep patterns and hormone levels, and even changes in the weather, can cause migraines.

Migraine is a genetic neurological disease, but there are several factors that can contribute to its appearance. Changes in sleep patterns and hormone levels, and even changes in the weather, can trigger migraines. Sometimes it is only enough to eat a certain food. Mayo Clinic neurologist Dr. Amaal Starling shares five lifestyle changes that can help control migraines:

Sleep
Exercise
Eat Healthy
Avoid dehydration
Controlling stress
Dr. Starling recommends avoiding changes in sleep patterns, if possible, even on weekends.

"Some of my patients say 'I get migraine attacks on weekends when I'm not working' and I ask them, 'Well, what time do you normally wake up? What time do you go to sleep? ' There is usually a very marked difference between normal hours and those on weekends, and that can cause migraine attacks, "she says. "Consistency in your sleep pattern is very important."

Sticking to an exercise schedule can be very important and raise your threshold for a migraine.

"According to studies, about 20 minutes of aerobic exercise three times a week works as well as some of the medications we prescribe," says Dr. Estornino.

She advises eating healthy whole foods and not skipping meals.

"Processed foods should be avoided and one should try not to have too high values (peaks) and too low values (valleys) of glucose in the blood," says Dr. Estornino. “You also have to avoid skipping meals. All of these are tools to raise that threshold.

It is also important to be sure you are well hydrated.

“This is very important, especially during the winter months. People, in winter, as it is colder, do not feel as thirsty and in fact they become more dehydrated than in the summer ”, says Dra. Estornino.

Managing stress is also essential. This is accomplished by practicing mindfulness and meditation.

"We all have stress in life," says Dr. Starling. "It's really about how we handle it and how we deal with stress."

Dr. Starling argues that implementing these lifestyle changes can help raise the threshold for migraine headaches so that things that cannot be controlled, like the weather, are not as strong a trigger for a migraine attack.

"It is very empowering for people to listen to what they can control and what they can't control as much," she says.
