[Moto] Moonbike's lightweight electric snowmobile arrives in America

The French company Moonbike is preparing to bring its fun snowmobile to the United States, just in time for winter.

The Moonbike may have "bicycle" in its name, although it's hard to call it a true snowmobile.

But don't be fooled by that back track. It is not a traditional snowmobile either, as it rides on a single front ski instead of two.

No matter what you call it, the truth is that it seems like fun.

With a 3 kW electric motor, the Moonbike reaches a top speed of 42 km / h.

That's not going to compete well with a true electric snowmobile, but it's definitely easier to cram the 82kg (182lb) into the back of a truck or SUV. Hence, the Moonbike seems more suitable for local antics in the snow than it is for real snowmobiles.

The single 2.5 kWh battery pack offers a maximum of one hour of use in Sport mode or one hour and a half of use with easier driving in Eco mode. According to the company, that means about 20 km in Sport mode or 35 km in eco mode.

There is also the option of a 5 kWh battery that doubles the range and adds another 12 kg of weight to the Moonbike.

A full charge takes about five hours from a standard wall socket, or about half that time with the faster charger option.

Pricing starts at US $ 8,500, and deliveries are planned "before and during the 2021-22 winter season." I guess that means they'll be out soon, if I'm reading that right.

 

The company says it is producing 400 Moonbikes for "the European and American markets," so they appear to be in the works.

We have seen other electric snow bikes already, but usually not that capable.

The Canadian company Envo has its own offering of snow karts, as well as a kit that allows cyclists to convert their own bicycle into an electric snowmobile.

And we're also starting to see the introduction of full-size electric snowmobiles with enough power to compete with many electric cars.

But the Moonbike definitely fills that gap as a snow sports bike tool that is likely to provide riders with an incredible experience.
