Also called Ayu by her fans, Hamasaki wrote all the lyrics for her songs, even producing and composing her own material. Born and raised in Fukuoka, Hamasaki moved to Tokyo in 1993 at the age of fourteen to start her entertainment career. In 1998, under the tutelage of Max Matsuura, CEO of Avex Trax, Ayumi Hamasaki released her debut single "Poker Face",[note 1] and, a year later, her debut album, A Song for XX.[note] 1]. The album debuted at number one on the Oricon music charts, remaining there for five weeks, selling over a million copies. The next ten studio albums released by Hamasaki sold over a million copies in Japan, with the third, Duty, selling nearly three million units. A Best, their first greatest hits album, is their best-selling album, with more than four million units distributed in Japan alone. Since 2006, after the release of the Secret album, Hamasaki's single and album sales have declined. Ayumi Hamasaki has sold over 50 million records, making her Japan's top-selling solo artist. Hamasaki also has several records in the Japanese music sphere, such as the most number of #1 singles on the Oricon (38), the most consecutive number of #1 singles on the Oricon (25) and the most number of albums and singles with more than one million copies sold.[note 2] Between the years 1999 and 2010, Hamasaki had at least two of its chart-topping singles. She is also the first female artist to have top ten studio albums on Oricon since her debut, and the first artist to have a #1 album on Oricon for 13 consecutive years since her debut. His second remix album, Super Eurobeat Presents Ayu-ro Mix, is recognized as one of the best-selling remix albums of all time, and remains his only album to be recognized worldwide. During the height of her career, Hamasaki was dubbed the "Empress of J-pop" due to her po[CENSORED]rity in Japan and across Asia. After an ear infection, acquired in 2000, aggravated by constant exposure to loud sound, Ayumi Hamasaki suffered a worsening and hearing loss, being completely deaf in the left ear.
