A US official revealed that US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken will meet with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in Stockholm to discuss the escalation at the Ukrainian border, while the President of Ukraine called for direct talks with Russia to end the war in the east of the country.

In Washington, a senior US State Department official said that Anthony Blinken will hold a meeting with Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe summit, which will be held in Stockholm on Thursday.

The meeting comes as tension escalates between the Western military alliance and Russia over Moscow's build-up of forces near Ukraine's eastern border.

Before meeting with Lavrov, the official said, Blinken will hold a separate meeting with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba on the sidelines of the summit, Reuters reported.

In Kiev, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Wednesday that his country is willing to hold direct talks with Moscow in order to end the war against Russian-backed forces in the eastern Donbass region.

"We must admit that we will not be able to stop the war without direct negotiations with Russia, and today this has already been recognized by all external partners," Zelensky said.

Zelensky was speaking in parliament after Ukraine urged NATO to prepare for economic sanctions against Moscow and strengthen military cooperation with Kiev as a way to deter Russia from launching any new offensive after it massed its forces near it.
