[Politics] Census in Ecuador will take place in the last quarter of 2022

According to the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC), the final results could be ready in April 2023.

The Po[CENSORED]tion and Housing Census will finally be executed in the last quarter of 2022 after several years of planning.

The project began to be planned in 2018 with the objective of being executed in November 2020, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the National Statistics and Census Commission (Conec) decided to postpone the training, logistics and registration phases for the following year. .

The results are expected to be ready in April 2023, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC).

"The technology that we plan to use in the survey will allow us to have the data in less time with respect to previous censuses," said the institution.

In addition, it indicates that, at the moment, the budget and the methodology are being evaluated. Likewise, it still does not define who and how many people will carry out the census and if the activity will be in one or more days.

What is progressing is the census questionnaire and it is in its final phase, according to the INEC.

This procedure comes from 2019, where through the Special Statistics Commission for the Po[CENSORED]tion and Housing Census, the design and construction of the questionnaire was discussed with different public institutions in the country.

Then there was the accompaniment of international experts and workshops have been held with civil society organizations, academia, among other actors.

"Several pilot tests, cognitive, focus groups have been carried out," said the INEC, adding that a pilot census is being carried out to refine details.

“INEC is evaluating the methodology to be applied in the next National Po[CENSORED]tion and Housing Census. This will depend to a great extent on the results of the pilot census, since this exercise will allow to put a test all the components of the statistical operation ”, according to the INEC.

This pilot plan is carried out with the accompaniment of observers from the United Nations Po[CENSORED]tion Fund (UNFPA) Ecuador and UN Women. For example, in the Limón Indanza canton, in Morona Santiago, it is running and will run until December 4.

In Limón Indanza they will visit about 10,000 inhabitants and request the identity card numbers of the family nucleus, among other information.

Meanwhile, before the national census, the INEC already concluded the Cartographic Update and Housing Pre-Census last July.

With this process, the map of the country was updated through a quick count of people and the location of the houses. "This information is vital for the planning of the national census operation," said the institution.

For this procedure, $ 26,215,453 were invested and the cartographic updates searched the houses and carried out the information gathering, maintaining the biosecurity measures.

"All the statistical operations of the INEC have health and safety protocols, as well as others related to the approach in the interviews, for example: within the manuals and instructions used in the field operations there are the main recommendations to apply to avoid risks in the health of field personnel, as well as of the po[CENSORED]tion in general ”, indicated the INEC.
