Noticias ALEJANDRO Posted November 22, 2021 Posted November 22, 2021 There is a cage with goats and chickens, above a sign: "All kinds of Santeria articles." The atmosphere is loaded. Strong odors of excrement. Shopkeepers who are watching strangers with their eyes. Everyone is alert in the Sonora market, which for a few weeks has been at the center of a heated debate on animal abuse, after a fire in its facilities on November 4 brought to light the conditions in which they live the multiple species that are sold in the place. Literally, the flames forced the merchants to move the cages to the street, revealing a reality that animal rights groups have been denouncing for years. In the animal sales area you can find everything: there are cages with rickety dogs that shiver from the cold - "it's just that he just had a bath," the business owner will excuse himself -; tropical birds and fish; goats and sheep; rats, mice, hamsters, guinea pigs; pigs and frogs, which, if sucked, generate hallucinations. For 1,000 or 2,000 pesos, you can leave the place with almost any species, which, in most cases, live poorly in small cages, in unsanitary conditions, without guarantees of health, veterinary checks, permits or licenses. And the not-so-hidden face of the market: black roosters and pigeons that are used, as the poster indicated, in rituals of Santeria, a cult of Afro-Cuban origin that sacrifices animals for its ceremonies. —Santeria is a very interesting religion, it makes you want to study it and learn more about it, but there are also scary things, like what they do with animals. https://elpais.com/mexico/2021-11-22/el-incendio-en-el-mercado-de-sonora-revela-el-maltrato-animal-en-la-ciudad-de-mexico.html
