Noticias ALEJANDRO Posted November 16, 2021 Posted November 16, 2021 The Colombian Navy rescued a jaguar that was in the middle of the sea 3 kilometers from the Colombian Caribbean coast in a state of exhaustion, authorities reported Monday. A fisherman from the Gulf of Urabá informed the coast guard of the presence of the feline that was in the middle of the sea adrift "in an evident state of exhaustion," according to the Urabá Coast Guard commander, the frigate captain Jaime González. "We proceeded with great caution, a log approached the animal allowing it to cling to it," said the captain, who reported that later, when the jaguar climbed onto the log, they towed it to the coast. The feline was taken by means of this trailer system to the mouth of the León River, in the municipality of Turbo, in the department of Antioquia, "which is its natural habitat and is the protected area where it lives," said González. "Once the jaguar was seen near the shore, it went into the vegetation," added the coast guard. The Corporation for the Sustainable Development of Urabá (Corpurabá) reported that the jaguar ("panthera onca") normally "travels the waters of Bocas del Atrato and is a good swimmer." However, they do not know "how it came to such a situation." They took the opportunity to remind the community that these animals, the largest feline in America that can measure 180 centimeters, do not attack if they do not feel in danger and are in a state of "near threatened", according to the International Union for the Conservation of the Nature (IUCN).
