The first voting centers in Nicaragua, in Managua, opened their doors this Sunday before 07:00 local time (13:00 GMT), in an election in which the current president, Daniel Ortega, in power since 2007, is looking for his fourth mandate and fifth consecutive.

The polls were opened at 06:38 local time (12:38 GMT), 22 minutes ahead of schedule, and one of the first Nicaraguans to vote was Foreign Minister Denis Moncada, according to local television images.

A total of 3,160 Voting Centers will open their doors this Sunday for the general elections, in which citizens will elect the president and vice president of Nicaragua, 90 deputies before the National Assembly and 20 representatives before the Central American Parliament.

Ortega is seeking his third consecutive reelection, with seven aspiring opposition presidential candidates in prison, accused of "treason."
